What Is Asbestos & How is Asbestos Removal Carried out?

Asbestos is NOT a man made substance, it is in fact mined as a natural material since the early 19th century. It comes in 3 common forms (Blue, Brown & White) it is wrapped around rocks that is mined from ground. The importation and use was banned in the UK in 1985 for Blue and Brown and 1999 for White asbestos, but some countries still mine and use the product (Indian, China and Russia). It was long thought that White asbestos was not harmful hence the delay on it being banned from use and importation. It has been known because of the stock piles that this can be found in buildings as new as 2003. Although any property/building built prior to 2000 should have a survey before any refurbishment work is carried out.

Different Types of Asbestos

There are 3 main types of (ACM’s) Asbestos Containing Materials, they are Notifiable Asbestos, Notifiable Non-license Asbestos & Non-Licensed Asbestos. It takes a very good asbestos professional to properly risk assess which category an asbestos product comes into depending on a lot of factors. But Notifiable Asbestos Removal is be carried out by a company holding a current in date licence from the HSE.

Notifiable Non-Licence and Non-Licensed asbestos does not require this license but HSE are clear from the current regulations (CAR 2012) that the contractors are trained, have suitable equipment and competent to carry out the work.

Competent Asbestos Removal

Asbestos Removal should always be under taken by companies or persons competent to do so.

What you should expect is:

  • Works Carried out to CAR2012 (Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012)
  • Upper Tier Carriers Licence & Hazardous Waste Consignment Notes
  • Trained & Competent Staff with correct RPE & PPE
  • Fully Insured & Using Correct Equipment

A common misconception is that anyone can remove asbestos, this is not true and should only be under taken if trained and competent to do so. If unsure or if you require some advise before starting a project please contact us.

To correctly assess the removal process it maybe required to take samples should a survey not have been undertaken.
